The Road ahead for Technology Implementation

This is from the work of Ruben R. Puentedura, Ph.D.

You are on a journey that will take you through 4 Phases.

Phase 1 – Substitution

In this phase you simply use your computer to replace something you are already doing in a very similar manner to what you do now. You used to write notes on the board for students to work from, now you create worksheets with the information or even pretty multimedia presentations or podcasts.

Does it make it easier for you?
No, you already have the knowledge, you can write it on the board easier than you can create a document the computer.

Does it make it better for the Students?
No still passive receptors of information and in fact where your writing speed and their copying speed dictated the information flow now they can be overwhelmed with a greater amount of information you present them.

Why do we have to travel through this phase?
You need to become familiar with the computer and how to create content manipulating data, storing images and finding information. You will manage to understand the operations of software which will form the basic skill of any creation system you end up using.

Phase 2 – Augmentation

You present your information to the students but along with the information you now present you add external sources where needed. Your worksheet is put online and has a video embedded or links off to a simulation or wiki.

Does it make it easier for you?
No, You now need to search, filter and evaluate more content, figure out how to display it in an effective manner in a format and place that the student can reach.

Does it make it easier for students?
A little, while they are still passive they are now exposed to a variety of information sources deemed to be credible, they see that information exists and has value beyond the realm of the presenting teacher. Students may even get to learn in slightly interactive way and receive a small amount of feedback from sources other than the teacher.

Why do you have to travel through this phase?
You are becoming exposed to online content in a variety of mediums from sources such as blogs, wikis, iTunesU, Podcasts. You are able to integrate these into your own content management system.

Phase 3 – Modification

Tasks are redesigned significantly and students are able to construct from a variety of sources textural, visual and audio spaces, in collaboration with each other. Students can create and manage a wiki with a mix of original and curated content that shows understanding of the topic.

Does it make it easier for you?
Yes with your skills in content creation and manipulation from phase 1 and your search, filter and multimedia management skills from phase 2 you are able to drive and curate the learning space as the students work on it.

Does it make it easier for the students?
Yes they are not restricted in their sources, they are not publishing to an audience of one and are able to get continual feedback from a variety of people in real time.

Why do you need to travel through this phase?
This is the web as it is now and as people in the world use it you are now up to speed with the current technology and able to move between teaching and knowledge curation in a collaborative world.

Phase 4 – Redefinition

You work with learners to create visualizations of narrative and structural aspects of text that add to the knowledge of the community and is shared with ecosystem of global learners. Through your own Personal Learning Network (PLN) you are connecting your students to other learners.

Does it make it easier for you?
Yes there are no distinctions between creating, presenting or teaching all your work is continually shared with your students in ways they need. There is no issues publishing or presenting information as you create in a collaborative space.

Does it make it easier for the students?
The learning is part of where they are and who they are. They learn and get feedback socially and academically. They choose methods of information sharing and presentation, the work is visible and feedback possible during the entire creation process and methods are modeled by those included.
