Back-up your Data

You will lose your data, break your computer or have it stolen.

Thursday night I was putting my final touches to a presentation that I had to deliver to 70 Principals and Deputies.

10pm thursday Night I get this

Yes Panic set-in

The computer would not boot and I couldn’t get the data off.

Lucky for me I had backed up my computer using time machine.

I was able to go to the external disk I use as a time machine get off the file I backed up, Used another machine to finish off the presentation as I had lost the last days worth of work.

Saturday morning took bought a new HDD to use while I wait to get one back from Warrantee and used time machine to restore the computer as I need to finish a presentation and assembly that I have also lost a few hours work on. But at least I have not lost everything.

It’s not the quickest but it will restore my computer back to where it was. There was a bit of luck in this that I normally back up only on the weekend but on Wednesday night I just happened to be showing someone how to use it.

I did break my own rule for backup. whenever I am working on a critical project I keep a copy on a thumbdrive.

I would strongly recommend that you look into backup options.

1. Save critical work related work on the network at school

2. If you have crucial work you are working on keep a current copy on a thumbdrive

3. us a complete system backup by using time machine.

I also recommend investigating some of the following options

Dropbox – 2GB of web storage accessible from anywhere

Mozy – free online backup

carbonite – online payed backup, access your files from the web anywhere backs up automatically whenerver you are connected to internet does cost money.
